ARMY POSTAL SERVICE (APS) in India Post

The origins of the Army Postal Service (APS) trace back to 1856 when the first Field Post Office (FPO) accompanied British Expeditionary forces to Persia. Throughout World War I and World War II, FPOs were requisitioned by the Army from the Department of Posts to support Expeditionary Forces. During World War II, volunteers from the Department of Posts and Telegraphs were enlisted as combatants to manage the FPOs.

Originally affiliated with the Army Service Corps (ASC), APS evolved over time. In March 1972, APS was established as a separate Corps, signifying its crucial role in military logistics.

Following Independence in 1947, 1 Central Base Post Office (CBPO) was established in New Delhi, with 2 CBPO inaugurated in Kolkata in 1964. These serve as pivotal hubs for military postal operations, with 56 APO in New Delhi and 99 APO in Kolkata acting as the primary Central Base Post Offices respectively.

One of APS's key functions is ensuring the security of unit locations. This means units can maintain consistent addresses even when relocating, enhancing operational efficiency and communication within the military infrastructure.

At the helm of APS is the Additional Director General APS, stationed at Army Headquarters with the rank of Major General. Assisting in the management and coordination of APS activities is the Deputy Director General APS, holding the rank of Brigadier at Army HQ.
