Census of Central Government Employees, Pensioners, Family Pensioners

According to the latest Annual Report from the Pay Research Unit (PRU) under the Department of Expenditure, the Central Government currently has a total of 1,08,099 employees in grade ‘A’, 2,92,117 employees in grade ‘B’, and a whopping 26,12,934 employees in grade ‘C’ as of March 1st, 2022.

Group-Wise Strength of CG Employees

As of March 1, 2020, the total number of regular Central Government Civilian Employees in India, including Union Territories, amounted to approximately 31.91 lakh. This figure represents the individuals currently occupying positions within the Central Government’s workforce, which falls slightly short of the sanctioned strength of 40.78 lakh. Remarkably, around 21.75% of these positions remain vacant, emphasizing the need for further recruitment efforts.

Out of the total manpower, it is intriguing to note that nearly 92% can be attributed to five major Ministries/Departments, namely Railways, Defence (Civil), Home Affairs, Posts, and Revenue. To provide a breakdown, Railways comprises 40.55% of the total strength, Home Affairs accounts for 30.50%, Defence (Civil) represents 12.31%, Posts contribute 5.66%, Revenue holds 3.26%, and all other Ministries/Departments collectively make up 7.72%.

Moreover, when considering the Central Police Forces, which have a sanctioned strength of 10.16 lakh employees, it is noteworthy that 9.05 lakh individuals were in position as of March 1, 2020. Additionally, in Union Territories, there were 0.58 lakh employees occupying positions out of a sanctioned strength of 0.75 lakh as of the same date.

Census of Pensioners in India

The esteemed Central Pension Accounting Office, along with the Controller General of Defence Accounts, Department of Post, Department of Telecommunications, and the Ministry of Railways, have graciously provided us with the latest statistics for the financial year 2021-22. Brace yourselves for these astounding numbers!

Let’s dive right in. We have categorized the data into different departments for your convenience. Here are the figures:

1. Civil Pensioners: We have a whopping 11,28,441 individuals who fall under this category, including both pensioners and family pensioners. The total expenditure incurred for this group amounts to a staggering 64,684.44 crores.

2. Defence Pensioners: Hold on to your hats, folks! We have a mind-boggling number of 36,03,609 pensioners in this group. This includes Armed Forces Pensioners, Civilian personnel, and Defence Civilian personnel. The total expenditure for this category reaches an astonishing 1,21,983.9 crores.

3. Telecom Pensioners: Brace yourselves for some jaw-dropping numbers! We have a significant count of 4,32,968 telecom pensioners in our midst. The expenditure incurred for this group amounts to a remarkable 14,895 crores.

4. Railways Pensioners: Hold on tight! We have an impressive 14,82,223 pensioners from the railways sector. The total expenditure for this category stands at an impressive 51,935.24 crores.

5. Postal Pensioners: Prepare to be amazed! We have a considerable count of 3,28,999 pensioners from the postal department. The total expenditure incurred for this group is a notable 785.82 crores.

Now, here comes the grand total, my dear readers. Brace yourselves for this monumental figure!

When we tally up all the pensioners from these departments, we arrive at a staggering count of 69,76,240 individuals. The total expenditure incurred for these pensioners during the financial year 2021-22 is an astronomical 2,54,284.4 crores.

Central Government Vacancies 2023

Over the past five years, the Government has been actively engaged in recruiting individuals for various positions across different ministries. In an effort to streamline the process, specific instructions have been issued to all Ministries and Departments, emphasizing the importance of promptly filling any remaining vacancies. Moreover, the Government of India has taken the initiative to organize Rozgaar Melas, which are expected to play a significant role in facilitating the appointment of suitable candidates to these vacant positions.

To provide a comprehensive overview, a total of 4,63,205 candidates, belonging to different categories such as SCs, STs, and OBCs, have been recommended by UPSC, SSC, and RRBs from April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2023. Additionally, during the first quarter of the year 2023-24, SSC and RRBs have recommended an additional 1,03,196 candidates for appointment purposes.

Sanctioned strength and Employees in position in Central Government as on 01.03.2016

As of March 1, 2016, the number of employees in the Central Government was 3,286,093. This includes regular civilian employees in various groups. It is important to note that the former Group D positions have now been classified as Group C following the implementation of the 6th Central Pay Commission’s recommendations. Additionally, as of March 1, 2016, there were vacant positions, and their percentage in relation to the total sanctioned posts is available for reference.
